The €200 Question
Two hundred euros is a completely reasonable budget for a proper everyday watch, and yet people either overspend chasing a brand name, or underspend and end up with something that needs replacing in a year. The sweet spot exists, but it requires knowing where to look.
After 20 years of repairing and selling watches in Durrës, we have a pretty clear sense of which pieces in this range are genuinely worth the money and which ones look great in the box but cause problems six months later.
A note on availability. Albania’s watch market is not as wide as Western Europe’s. Most Swiss brands require online ordering or a trip to Tirana. The good news: locally available options like Hislon and Navimarine punch well above their price and are easier to service and support in-country.
What Makes a Watch Worth Buying Under €200?
Before listing specific models, it helps to know what to evaluate. A good budget watch needs:
- A reliable movement. Japanese quartz movements (Miyota, Seiko NH) are excellent in this range. Chinese quartz can be hit or miss. Avoid anything that doesn’t state its movement origin.
- Solid case construction. Stainless steel is the benchmark. Alloy cases look the same but rust at the lugs and discolour over time.
- Readable servicability. Can you get a battery, gasket, or strap locally? Obscure brands with no local presence are a headache when something eventually needs attention.
- Honest water resistance. 5 ATM is the minimum for daily wear. Anything less means no hand-washing with it on.
Top Picks Under €200 in Albania
Hislon - Classic Steel Dress Models (€60–100)
Hislon’s dress watches are clean, well-proportioned, and built with stainless steel cases and mineral glass. The quartz movements are reliable, and the cases come in 38–42mm sizes that work for a range of wrists. For an everyday watch you wear to work and don’t think about, these are hard to beat at this price.
Navimarine - Sport & Dive-Style Models (€70–130)
Navimarine leans into a sport-nautical aesthetic, bold bezels, clear dials, and solid water resistance ratings. These are the watches people reach for on weekends, at the beach, or when they need something that can take a knock. The build quality at this price is genuinely good, and the design vocabulary is recognisably inspired by established sport-watch traditions without pretending to be something it isn’t.
Casio G-Shock / Edifice (if you can find them locally, €80–150)
Casio’s reputation in this range is unmatched for durability. The G-Shock line survives more abuse than most people will ever put it through. Not the most elegant dress option, but if the watch is going on someone’s wrist for active daily use, it’s hard to argue against.
Seiko 5 Series (€120–180, online ordering)
For a mechanical watch in this budget, Seiko 5 is the gold standard. Automatic movement, day-date display, 100m water resistance, and Seiko’s proven in-house calibre. You’ll likely need to order online, but it’s one of the most discussed and recommended entry-level automatics for good reason.
Orient Bambino / Mako (online, €130–180)
Orient is Seiko’s sibling brand and offers excellent value in the dress and sport segments. The Bambino is a classic slim dress watch with an in-house automatic; the Mako is a more robust dive-style piece. Both are consistently well-reviewed and hold up well with basic maintenance.
Hislon and Navimarine are stocked locally at Iglisi Watch in Durrës. If you’d like to see them in person before committing, come in or send us a message. We can also service any of the watches on this list, battery changes, strap swaps, or a full inspection.
What to Avoid in This Price Range
The biggest mistake at the €200 mark is paying for a name you’ve heard of without checking what you’re actually getting. Some things to avoid:
- Unbranded “fashion” watches from online marketplaces. These often use the cheapest possible movements and have alloy or plated cases. They look fine for a few months.
- Vintage-looking watches without movement information. “Antique style” watches at low prices almost always use the cheapest movements and will be impossible to service locally.
- Any watch claiming to be a luxury brand at under €200. Genuine Tissot starts above €200. If a “Rolex” or “Omega” is offered at this price locally, it is a replica. Full stop.
Replica watches are a real issue in the Albanian market. They are sold openly in some tourist areas. At first glance they can look convincing, but they use movements with a lifespan measured in months, not years, and they cannot be serviced. If you are unsure whether a watch is genuine, bring it to us for an inspection, we check these regularly.
Quartz or Automatic Under €200?
At this budget, quartz is almost always the more practical choice. Automatic movements at under €200 from lesser-known brands often use lower-grade components that need servicing sooner than expected. The exception is the Seiko and Orient models mentioned above, which use proven in-house calibres designed to last decades.
If you want an automatic below €200 and don’t mind ordering online, Seiko 5 is the standard recommendation. If you want something you can walk in and pick up today in Durrës, a Hislon or Navimarine quartz will serve you reliably without needing attention for years.
Where to Buy
For the locally available options on this list. Hislon and Navimarine, you can find a curated selection in our online shop or come see them in person at our workshop on Rruga Aleksander Goga, Durrës. No appointment needed.
For the online brands (Seiko, Orient, Casio), the usual reliable routes are the brand’s official website or established European retailers with tracked shipping. We would be cautious about large marketplaces where you cannot verify the seller’s credibility.
