Sapphire Crystal Watches Under 7,000 Lek: What We Actually Have

Sapphire is the one specification customers ask for by name, and it is usually the specification that pushes a watch out of this price band. On our counter it does not have to. The Romanson Parie BH3054GBR is 74 euro (6,800 L), and its own description says sapphire crystal glass, Swiss quartz and a full gold-plated case and bracelet. Above it, sapphire here means Hislon, and the cheapest Hislon is the Classic Silver Sunburst at 129 euro (11,900 L). That is the honest shape of the answer. What Sapphire Actually Buys You in Daily Wear

Hardness, and only hardness. Synthetic sapphire sits at about 9 on the Mohs scale, second to diamond, and in normal wear it does not scratch. Mineral glass sits around 5 to 6, which sounds close and is not: a door frame, keys in the same pocket, the edge of a desk you slide your wrist across every working day. Neither material can be polished once it is marked, so a hairline in mineral glass is permanent.

That is the whole practical difference and it is larger than it sounds, because the crystal is the part of a watch a stranger looks straight through. A scratched crystal is the single detail that makes a watch read as old across a table, more than a scuffed case and more than a tired strap. How to Tell Sapphire From Mineral Glass

Read the description first. We name a crystal only where we have verified it, so sapphire on our counter means the Romanson Parie or a Hislon. The only other crystal we name anywhere is on the Citizen Quartz GN at 60 euro (5,500 L), which says mineral glass. Everything else we sell carries no crystal claim from us at all, and a shop that names the crystal on every watch it lists is guessing on most of them.

Look for the sheen. Anti-reflective coating is applied almost exclusively to sapphire, and it shows as a faint blue or purple cast when you tilt the watch under a light.

Tap it with a fingernail. Acrylic sounds dull and plastic, mineral and sapphire both sound crisper. That separates plastic from glass, not mineral from sapphire, so it only takes you halfway.

Distrust the price rule. Sapphire does get more common as prices climb, but the rule is weaker than people think, and the Romanson is the reason we stopped repeating it.

The One Under 7,000 Lek: Romanson Parie BH3054GBR

The Romanson BH3054GBR at 74 euro (6,800 L) is worth reading clause by clause, because every clause is a claim we do not make lightly: Swiss quartz, sapphire crystal glass, a full gold-plated case and bracelet, an elegant rectangular case, a sunburst dial, dot and bar markers, a date display and Swiss-made precision.

The rectangular case is the part that gets underestimated. A rectangle reads as a dress watch from across a room in a way a round case has to work at, and it is the shape most people picture when they picture a gold dress watch. The sunburst dial does the rest: brushed outward from the centre so it swings from bright to dark as your wrist turns, which is a finish that normally sits further up a price list.

Why 74 Euro Can Carry Both Sapphire and Swiss

A Swiss quartz movement is a component, not a luxury. Switzerland has built quartz movements in industrial volume since the 1970s, and what makes a Swiss watch expensive is rarely the movement in a quartz dress watch. It is the case work, the hand finishing, the marketing and the name. A watch can carry a Swiss quartz movement and a modest price without either fact being untrue. Sapphire is cheap in small flat sizes and expensive in large shaped ones. Synthetic sapphire is grown in quantity and then sliced; the cost sits in the diameter, the doming and any shaping. A small flat crystal over a rectangular dress case is close to the cheapest sapphire a factory can fit, which is exactly why this watch has one and a large domed sport case at the same price would not.

Gold-plated is a finish over base metal. The description says gold-plated and not gold, which is the third saving and the one nobody should misunderstand.

What Gold-Plated Means, and What It Does Not

Gold plating is a thin layer of real gold deposited over a base metal. It is gold you can see and it is not gold you could weigh: the value is in the finish rather than the metal. It wears at the high points first, which on a bracelet watch means the clasp edges and the outer links, over years of daily wear rather than months.

The alternative wording is worth knowing too. The Hislon Classic in full gold-tone stainless steel at 189 euro (17,400 L) is described as gold-tone, which is a colour and not a plating claim. Above 7,000 Lek, Sapphire Means Hislon

• Hislon Masterwork at 184 euro (17,000 L). A jet-black dial, three subdials, red accent details, a date window, a steel bracelet and a sapphire crystal. This one is a real chronograph rather than a lookalike, and we keep those two lists apart.

• Sapphire on steel, with a bracelet you can live in. Hislon Classic Silver Sunburst at 129 euro (11,900 L).
• Sapphire as a gift for a woman. Hislon Women Classic Queen at 149 euro (13,700 L), or Hislon Queen Crystal Bezel at 151 euro (13,900 L) for the crystal-set bezel.
• Sapphire with subdials that work. Hislon Masterwork at 184 euro (17,000 L).
• Gold plating without sapphire, for less. Citizen Quartz GN at 60 euro (5,500 L), Japanese quartz over mineral glass. A good watch making a different promise.

Sapphire is not the reason to buy a watch. It is the reason the watch you bought still looks new in two years, which on a dress watch you wear to everything is most of the point.
