Everybody has a birthday every year, which is what makes it different from every other occasion we have written about. A wedding is planned months out. New Year is on a date you can see coming. A birthday turns up while you are thinking about something else and leaves you about a week. A watch answers that better than most things at this price, and badly in two specific cases. Both are below.
When a Watch Is the Right Gift, and When It Is Not
Take the case against it first, because it is short and it is real. If the person already wears one watch every day and loves it, a second watch is a harder gift than it looks. It goes in a drawer beside the one they actually reach for. And if you know nothing about their taste at all, a watch is a personal object and you would be guessing; there are better things to guess with.
Everything else is in favour. A watch is worn rather than stored, which very little else in this price range can claim. It does not need a size the way clothing does, and if the bracelet sits loose we take links out at the counter in a few minutes, free, including for a watch that arrived by courier rather than being bought in the shop. It survives being kept: a good share of the batteries we change are in watches somebody was given years ago.
What to Spend
Our counter runs from €50 to €249. Most birthday gifts come from the lower half of that and there is nothing wrong with it: the distance between the bottom of our range and the middle is finish and detail, not whether the watch keeps time or how long it lasts. The three bands below are the ones our shelf actually falls into, so there is no point pretending otherwise. If you want the reasoning behind what separates them, we set it out in what a watch actually costs at each tier.
Under 7,000 Lek
The deepest part of our counter, and where most birthday gifts come from.
The Philippe Lauren Steel Classic at 58 euro (5,400 L) is a plain steel dress watch, silver sunburst dial, applied baton indices, nothing shouting. It is the safest thing on the counter to give somebody whose taste you are not certain of.
The Daniel Klein F at 60 euro (5,500 L) is the same idea warmer: a soft white sunburst dial with rose gold-tone indices and hands, on a polished bracelet.
The Romanson BH3054GBR at 74 euro (6,800 L) is the one that punches out of its band. Swiss quartz, sapphire crystal, a full gold-plated rectangular case with a sunburst dial. Sapphire is unusual at this money and we only say it where it is true.
7,000 to 14,000 Lek
Where you go when the watch has to feel like it cost something.
The Casio MTP-B145D at 89 euro (8,200 L) has a striking green sunburst dial, a faceted bezel and an integrated steel bracelet. It reads as a considerably more expensive watch than it is.
The Daniel Klein Exclusive Chronograph at 89 euro (8,200 L) is a working chronograph: three subdials, deep blue sunburst dial, rotating dive-style bezel, luminous batons.
The Cortébert Oval Moonphase at 141 euro (13,000 L) is the one people stop at. Polished oval steel case, champagne dial, Roman numerals, a day subdial, a pointer date and a moon phase window at six.
Over 14,000 Lek
The ceremonial end, for a birthday that gets remembered rather than marked.
The Hislon Masterwork at 184 euro (17,000 L) is a sport-chic chronograph, jet-black dial, three subdials, red accents, sapphire crystal and a steel bracelet.
The Hislon Classic at 199 euro (18,400 L) is the quiet one: fluted bezel, horizontal-stripe silver dial, sapphire crystal, date at three.
The Cortébert Black Bezel Chronograph at 249 euro (23,000 L) sits at the top of our counter, with a black bezel held by six exposed screws and a two-tone bracelet.
Choosing for the Person
Once the budget is settled the rest is about who is receiving it, and we have written the long version of each of these separately.
- Watch gifts for men, which covers the professional and the outdoor cases separately.
- Watch gifts for women, which goes through dress, two-tone and gold-finish, and sport.
- Matching pairs for couples, if the birthday is one half of a couple and you want the other half to make sense later.
- Graduation and wedding gifts, which are the same buyer as this one a few months either side.
- New Year gifts, if the birthday happens to land in that fortnight where everything overlaps.
Which Style Actually Suits Them
Style is a shorter question than it looks. Watch what they already wear rather than asking. Somebody in a suit most days is a dress watch; somebody outdoors is steel and a higher water rating; somebody who wears gold jewellery will not thank you for brushed steel. Our guide to dress, sport and casual watches is the long-form version of that paragraph.
The one shortcut that works. Send us a photo of the watch they wear now, or of their wrist on any old picture, and we will tell you which of ours is closest. It is the fastest way through this and it costs nothing.
If They Already Wear a Watch
This is the case where we would rather sell you less. If they already have a watch they love and it has stopped, or the strap has gone, or it has been in a drawer since the battery died, having it working again lands harder than a new one does. We are a repair bench before we are a shop: a battery takes about two minutes while you wait, and a strap is not much longer. Our piece on repairing or replacing a watch sets out where the line falls.
The Part Nobody Puts on a Website
Three things we do that we have never said on the front of this site.
- Some models come in their own box, and we will tell you which before you order rather than after. Not every watch has one and we would rather say so.
- We can leave the price off everything that goes with the watch, so the person receiving it never sees what it cost.
- A card with your own message goes in with it if you want one.
None of that costs extra. Ask when you message us.
Ordering It from Anywhere in Albania
Delivery is free anywhere in the country and you pay the courier when it arrives, so nothing leaves your pocket before the watch is in your hands. Full terms are on our delivery and returns page.
If it turns out to be wrong, message us and we will sort it out. A courier delivery to Tirana and a purchase at our counter are not the same situation, so we would rather hear what happened than hand you one policy that fits neither. The published returns and guarantee terms are where that conversation starts.
The bracelet is sized free at the counter. We take links out for anyone who buys in the shop, and whoever ends up wearing it is just as welcome to walk in and have it done even though the watch was ordered online. A few minutes, nothing to pay.
The Straight Answer
If you want one recommendation rather than a range: the Daniel Klein Exclusive Chronograph at 89 euro (8,200 L). It is a real chronograph, it looks like more money than it is, it suits almost anybody, and it sits in the band most birthday gifts come from. If that is above what you had in mind, the Philippe Lauren Steel Classic at 58 euro (5,400 L) is the safe one, and nobody has ever been disappointed by it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a watch a good birthday gift?
Usually yes, and there are two cases where it is not. A watch is worn rather than put away, it does not need a size the way clothing does, and we adjust the bracelet free at the counter if it sits loose. It is a weak gift for somebody who already wears one watch every day and loves it, because the second one ends up in a drawer, and for somebody you know nothing about at all, because a watch is a personal object and you would be guessing.
How much should I spend on a watch for a birthday?
Most birthday gifts on our counter come from the band under 7,000 Lek, and a watch from there does not look like a compromise. Above that you are buying finish and detail rather than whether the watch works or how long it lasts. Tell us on WhatsApp what you want to spend and we will send back two or three specific models rather than a catalogue to scroll through.
Can you send a watch as a birthday gift anywhere in Albania?
Yes. Delivery is free anywhere in Albania and you pay the courier when the watch is already in your hands, so nothing leaves your pocket before you have seen it. Tell us it is a gift when you order and we will have it ready to hand over rather than just boxed for transport.
Does the watch come in a box?
Some models come in their own box and some do not. We will tell you which before you order rather than after, so ask when you message us and we will say plainly what that particular watch arrives in. We would rather answer that honestly than promise a box for everything.
Can you leave the price off?
Yes. We can leave the price off everything that goes with the watch, so the person receiving it never sees what it cost. A card with your own message can go in with it as well. Neither of those costs anything extra, and you only need to ask when you order.
What if they do not like it?
Message us and we will sort it out. A courier delivery to Tirana and a purchase at our counter in Durrës are not the same situation, so rather than quote you one policy that would not fit both, tell us what happened and we will find something that works. Our published returns and guarantee terms are the starting point of that conversation rather than the end of it.
The One We Would Hand You Over the Counter
The Daniel Klein Exclusive Chronograph is 89 euro (8,200 L), brand new with a 1-year guarantee. Three subdials, deep blue sunburst dial, rotating dive-style bezel. Free delivery anywhere in Albania, paid to the courier once it is in your hands, and we can leave the price off it.
