Buying a Watch in Shkodër: What Protects You When You Cannot Walk It Back

Shkodër sits at the top of the country and our workshop is on the coast at Durrës, which makes an order from the north about as long a journey as a watch takes inside Albania. That distance is the whole subject of this page, because it collapses every question a buyer has into one: what protects you when you cannot simply carry the watch back? The answer has a strong part and a weaker part, and both are below.

One Route, Not Two

Some shops have a branch in every city and a page like this would list the nearest one. We do not. Iglisi Watch is a single family workshop, open since 2009, and everything we sell is on the shelves there. For a reader in Shkodër that means the shop is a website, a WhatsApp thread and a courier, and we would rather say so on the first screen than bury it.

What does not change with the distance is the price. There is no delivery fee, no minimum order and no different number for the north: the figure on the product page is the figure the courier collects, whether the van is going to Shkodër or across town. Ordering from the far end of the country costs exactly what ordering from the next street costs.

The Inspection at the Door, in Detail

This is the mechanism that makes buying a watch unseen a reasonable thing to do, and it deserves more than one line. When the courier arrives he hands you the parcel first. No money has moved at that point, and none is due yet.

Open it while he waits. That is normal, it is expected, and it is not something you need to negotiate. Take the watch out of the box and give it a proper minute rather than a glance.

What to look at. Check the model and the reference against what we agreed in the message. Look at the dial in daylight: the colour, the indices, whether the date window is where the photograph showed it. Look at the bracelet or the strap, the finish on the case, the glass under a light. Check that the box and the papers are in there with it. If you ordered it as a gift, this is the moment to confirm it is the one you meant to send.

If it is not what you expected, hand it back. You pay nothing and you owe nothing. There is no deposit to forfeit, no transfer to reverse and no card number in existence, because we never asked for one and there is no field anywhere on this site that would take one. A refusal at the door is not a complaint or a dispute, it is a delivery that did not complete, and it costs you exactly zero.

Message us afterwards and we will work out what would have suited better. That is a normal conversation, not an awkward one, and we would far rather have it than sell somebody a watch they open once and put in a drawer. Why Nothing Is Paid in Advance

Plenty of sellers use the phrase cash on delivery and still ask for something up front. We do not ask for anything: no deposit, no bank transfer, no card details. The price agreed on WhatsApp is the price the courier collects, in cash, in Lekë, and that is the first time money enters the transaction.

The order of events is the point. The watch reaches you before your money reaches us, so until you have opened the box the risk of the sale sits with the shop rather than with the buyer. That is deliberate rather than generous. Nobody at the other end of the country can verify from photographs that a seller is honest, and asking that person to pay first is asking them to trust a stranger for nothing in return.

It is also the sharpest difference between this and a watch offered in a direct message, where the money usually goes first and the account sometimes disappears second. Cash on delivery removes the mechanism rather than warning you about it, because there is nothing to take when nothing has been sent.

The Part That Is Not Symmetrical

Here is the weaker half, and you should have it before you order rather than after. Refusing a watch at the door costs you nothing. Returning one after you have accepted it and paid is a different thing: a return is completed at the shop in Durrës, within 30 days, unworn and in its box, for an exchange or a refund. Somebody in Shkodër is further from that counter than almost anyone else in the country.

We are not going to dress that up. It is a real asymmetry and it is the honest reason the two minutes at the door matter more to you than to a customer in Durrës, who can settle a second thought on a Tuesday afternoon. Open the box slowly. Ask the courier for the minute. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole transaction and it is free.

The same logic applies before the courier is even booked. If you are torn between two models, ask first. The message we get most is not about delivery at all, it is somebody describing a person and a budget and asking what would suit, and we answer that with two or three specific watches from current stock rather than a catalogue. We would rather spend two minutes getting that right than have a watch travel to Shkodër and back.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong Later

Every watch we sell is brand new and carries our own 1-year guarantee from the date of purchase, on top of any manufacturer warranty. If it stops working under normal use inside twelve months because of a manufacturing fault, we repair or replace it. Your postcode does not appear anywhere in that sentence and it does not change it.

What the guarantee does not cover is the ordinary list, and it is the same list for everyone: accidental damage, water damage beyond the rating printed on the dial, battery replacement, strap wear, and faults caused by somebody else opening the case. That last one matters more at a distance than it looks, because a case opened by a third party ends the cover, so message us before anyone goes into it.

In practice, at this distance, the first step is always the same. Send us a message with the model and a photograph or a short video of what the watch is doing, and we work out what happens next case by case. Two smaller things worth knowing. A quartz watch needs a battery roughly every couple of years and we change one for 200 to 600 Lek depending on the battery, whether or not the watch came from us. And whenever a watch of ours is on our bench for anything at all, sizing the bracelet is free work that we do not charge for.

What a Buyer in Shkodër Is Actually Choosing Between

A local jeweller or watch counter. The genuine advantage is that you hold the watch before you decide, and that is worth something real. The limit is that the choice is whatever fits in one window, and a general jewellery shop stocks watches alongside gold and gifts rather than as its trade.

A stall or a phone-accessory shop. Cheap, unbranded, no papers, no guarantee and nobody to go back to when the crown pulls out in the third month. We see those on the bench often enough to know how they end, and the parts to repair them do not exist.

A seller in a direct message. Usually a photograph, a price and a request to send money first. Some are honest. The structure is not, because it puts the whole risk on you before you have seen anything.

A foreign website. Customs, a wait measured in weeks, a price that grows at the border, and a return you pay to ship out of the country. The guarantee, if there is one, is somebody else's problem to honour.

Us. An Albanian shop with a fixed address, one phone number, Albanian consumer law behind the sale, no money until the box is open, and a bench to come back to for the life of the watch.

A Watchmaker Is Not the Same Proposition as a Reseller

Repairs have been the trade here since 2009 and the sales counter grew out of them, which is not the usual order. It has one practical consequence for someone buying from Shkodër: every watch we chose to stock, we chose knowing what turns up broken. A movement we see failing in three years does not get onto the shelf, because the person who would have to fix it is the person who sold it.

A reseller's relationship with a watch ends at the sale. Ours does not, and that is most of why the guarantee is ours rather than a leaflet from a distributor. One shop, one bench, one contact for the battery in two years and the crystal in five.

Three Watches That Travel North Well

The Casio MTP-VD01 at 52 euro (4,800 L) is the safest thing to order unseen on the counter, because a Casio is a known quantity before the box is open. Stainless steel, black dial with luminous baton indices, a date window at 3 o'clock, 50m water resistance and Japanese quartz. Sharp enough for the office, tough enough for every day.
